Why does my intervalometer stop after one shot and show 99:59:59?

My JCC intervalometer takes the first exposure, then the display changes and shows 99:59:59 counting down, but the shutter does not fire again. For example, I set bulb/exposure time to 2 minutes, interval to 1 second, and number of shots to 15. It has worked before, so I’m not sure if I’m setting it wrong or if the unit is faulty. Does the interval need to be longer than the exposure time?

Try a 3 second 2 minute 2 second interval, and it should work. The interval has to be a bit longer than the shutter time. The shutter time has to occur in that interval. A one second interval will not do a two second shutter.
EDIT: changed interval, longer than the shutter duration. See comments. This manual posted by twalberg says "at least two seconds".

Most likely this is a settings issue, not a fault. On intervalometers, the interval must be longer than the exposure time, because the exposure has to finish before the next shot can begin.
In your example, a 2-minute exposure cannot work with a 1-second interval. Set the interval to at least the exposure time plus a little extra gap. For example, for a 2-minute bulb exposure, use something like 2:00 plus a few seconds (some users report at least 2 seconds extra).
So if exposure is 3 seconds and you want 1 second between shots, set the interval to 4 seconds total, not 1 second.
If it still fails even when the interval is longer than the exposure time, then the intervalometer may be defective.
