Why does my Canon T5i keep autofocus hunting in Live View with a Sigma 18-250mm lens?

I’m using a Canon Rebel T5i with a Sigma 18-250mm DC Macro OS lens. When the camera is on and I’m composing with the rear LCD in Live View, the lens keeps trying to autofocus even when I’m not pressing the shutter button. Is this normal behavior, and how can I stop it?

Some of the newer Canon EOS models, including your EOS Rebel T5i/700D, have a menu option named Continuous AF. With the T5i it is under tab 4 of the Shooting (Red tab with an icon that looks like a camera) Menu that includes most of the Live View options. If that option is set to Enable the camera will focus continuously as long as it is in Live View mode. To prevent the camera and lens from continuously focusing while in Live view set the Continuous AF menu option to Disable.

It's all on page 156 of the EOS Rebel T5i/700D Instruction Manual.

Yes—this can be normal on the Canon T5i in Live View. The most likely cause is the camera’s Continuous AF setting being enabled. When Continuous AF is on, the camera keeps adjusting focus while Live View is active, even if you are not pressing the shutter. On the T5i, look in the Shooting menu under the Live View settings and set Continuous AF to Disable.

A second possibility is accidental touch focusing on the touchscreen. If it seems to happen when the screen is touched, or the screen may be smudged, clean the LCD and see if that helps.

So this is probably a camera setting rather than a problem with the Sigma lens.
