Why does my Canon 70D exit Live View after about 30 minutes?

My Canon 70D stops Live View after roughly 30 minutes even with Auto Power Off disabled. Is this normal, and is there any setting or workaround to keep Live View running longer?

It's explained on page 217 of the manual - seems like Live View shooting will stop after 30 minutes no matter what (it is said that the display turns off without saying anything about the sensor, but most probably the sensor itself turns off too).

I guess it's a safety measure to prevent damage from overheating to the sensor and to save battery.

Yes — this is normal behavior on the Canon 70D. According to the manual, Live View shooting stops after about 30 minutes regardless of the Auto Power Off setting. Disabling Auto Power Off does not override that limit.

The most likely reasons are heat management and battery conservation, since Live View keeps the sensor and screen active continuously. Some users also associate the limit with broader camera recording restrictions, but in practical terms the key point is that the 70D is designed to stop Live View after around 30 minutes.

So if your camera consistently shuts off Live View at that point, it is likely working as intended rather than malfunctioning. There generally isn’t a menu option to extend that built-in Live View timeout beyond the camera’s limit.
