On my Epson V500, I enable Digital ICE and click Preview when scanning negatives. After the preview finishes, Digital ICE has turned itself off. Is that normal? Do I need to turn it back on before doing the full-resolution scan?

What type of film are you scanning?
ICE uses an infrared channel to detect defects, and some films (notably ALL traditional B+W films and kodachrome) won't work with the technology.
If you've set the scanner to B+W film it may automatically disable ICE?

This can be normal depending on the film type and scan settings. Digital ICE works by using an infrared channel to detect dust and scratches, so it does not work properly with some films—especially traditional black-and-white film and Kodachrome. If the scanner detects or is set to a film type that doesn’t support ICE, it may automatically disable the feature.
So first check what type of film you’re scanning and whether the scanner is set correctly. If it’s traditional B&W film or Kodachrome, Digital ICE likely won’t be available or useful. For supported color negative or color slide films, ICE should normally stay available for the final scan.
