Why does a lens still form a full image when the front element is partly blocked or damaged?

I’ve seen demonstrations where a lens still produces a complete, sharp image even when most of the front element is covered, or when the front element is badly damaged. Why doesn’t blocking part of the front reduce image coverage, and why doesn’t front-element damage necessarily destroy sharpness across the frame?

Mainly because every point on the front surface of the lens has light from every point in the Field Of View striking it, and other than that which is blocked by the aperture diaphragm the lens refracts all of that light to every point on the image sensor.
It is the same reason reflecting telescopes (Newtonian, Maksutov, Cassegrain, Schmidt, etc.) don't have a blind spot in the center where some of the incoming light is blocked by the secondary mirror(s) and support(s).

A lens can still form a full image because each small area of the front element receives light from the entire field of view, not just one small part of the scene. The lens then bends that light so it reaches all parts of the sensor.
