Why does a Gary Fong LightSphere make my Nikon SB-600 flash head fold down?

When I attach a Gary Fong collapsible LightSphere to my Nikon SB-600, the flash head tends to fold sideways/down when I move the camera, even with the head rotated to 90 degrees. The tilt lock button does not seem to hold it in place. Is this normal, or does it suggest a problem with the flash head lock mechanism?

Seems like your lock button is broken, my SB600 resists movement until the button is depressed.

EDIT (note to self: test before you post), actually it resists being raised, it can be lowered without depressing the button. Quite stiff though, the Fong must be quite heavy.

This is probably not normal. On an SB-600, the flash head should offer noticeable resistance, and the lock mechanism should help keep the head in position. Based on the community feedback, the head normally resists movement unless the release button is pressed, though it may lower more easily than it raises.

A LightSphere adds weight to the flash head, so if the head is folding down easily, either:

  • the modifier is simply too heavy for the head friction/lock to hold well, or
  • the flash head lock/friction mechanism may be worn or faulty.

So no, you’re likely not the only one to see this with a heavy diffuser, but it does suggest your SB-600 may not be holding as firmly as it should.
