Why do Nikon NEF RAW files look darker and redder in digiKam than the preview?

I'm importing 16-bit .NEF RAW files from a Nikon D5300 into digiKam. The embedded preview looks fine, but once the RAW is opened in digiKam's RAW import tool it appears darker, more reddish, and lower in contrast. Is there a correct way to decode these RAW files, or is additional setup needed in digiKam?

You are handling RAW files. Obviously the picture in DigiKam will not match the preview image, having a fixed white balance, contrast, etc. RAW images store far more dynamic range than a JPEG does, too. You have to process the RAW image, using curves or all the available controls to arrive at a pleasing picture. There is nothing wrong with your "decoding" of raw images, your job of post-processing starts here.
If you are new to RAW post-processing, maybe you should try Lightroom to have a taste of what you can accomplish.

What you’re seeing is normal for RAW. The nice-looking preview is usually the camera’s embedded JPEG preview, which already has white balance, contrast, and other picture settings applied. When digiKam opens the actual NEF RAW data, it starts from a flatter, less processed image, so it can look darker, redder, and lower contrast.
So the issue is usually not “incorrect 16-bit decoding” — it’s that RAW files need post-processing. Adjust white balance, curves/contrast, and other RAW controls to get the look you want.
A color-management issue may also contribute. In digiKam, generating/using the proper color profile for your camera can help improve color accuracy.
If your specific camera’s RAW support in your Linux software stack is incomplete, another RAW processor such as Darktable may handle those files better.
