Why do my instant-camera photos come out black outdoors, even on the outdoor setting?

I’m using a Fujifilm instant camera and indoor photos come out fine, but when I switch to the outdoor setting my pictures are coming out very dark or completely black. This happens outside in different conditions. What usually causes this on instant cameras, and what should I check to get properly exposed outdoor photos?

If indoor shots are fine but outdoor shots are black, the camera likely isn’t handling exposure correctly in bright light. On instant cameras, common causes are:
- the brightness/exposure selector is set incorrectly
- the lens or light sensor is blocked
- the shutter or aperture isn’t opening properly
- weak batteries causing exposure problems
- film issues or expired/improperly stored film
For outdoor shots, make sure the camera is actually set to the brighter outdoor/sunny mode, the lens is fully extended, and nothing is covering the sensor or flash area. Try fresh batteries and a new pack of film if possible.
If every outdoor photo is still black in all conditions while indoor shots work, the camera may have a fault with its exposure system or shutter and may need service or replacement.
