Why do my CyberSyncs fire with the test button but not when I press the shutter?

I’m using a Canon 5D Mark II, a Canon 580EX on-camera flash, one CyberSync transmitter, and two CyberSync receivers connected to Sunpak 383 flashes with Flash Zebra cords. The receivers fire the Sunpaks every time when I press the CyberSync test button, but during normal shooting the flashes are inconsistent or don’t fire from the shutter release. What setup issue or camera/flash setting could cause this?

Pressing the TEST button on the Cybersync should always work if the transmitter and receiver are on the same channel, that is how it is designed.
Now the question is ... how is the Cybersync transmitter connected to your CAMERA, not your 580EX flash? I hope you do have a PC-SYNC cord connecting the camera body to the Cybersync transmitter. If you do, then the issue is probably a bad connection or cable.

If the CyberSync test button fires the Sunpaks reliably, the transmitter/receivers are likely matched and working. The problem is usually in how the transmitter is being triggered during shooting.
Most likely causes from the answers:
- The CyberSync transmitter is not properly connected to the camera’s sync output.
- There is a bad hot-shoe/PC-sync connection or faulty cable.
- The transmitter battery may be weak.
- You may be trying to trigger the CyberSyncs through the Canon 580EX/E-TTL system, which is not the same as a simple manual sync signal.
In short: the test button fires the radio directly, but the shutter requires a proper sync signal from the camera. Make sure the CyberSync transmitter is connected directly to the camera body (hot shoe or PC-sync), not relying on the 580EX to pass the trigger signal. Check the cable and contacts, confirm channel matching, and replace the transmitter battery.
If you’re mixing Canon E-TTL flash gear with older manual flashes like the Sunpak 383, keep the radio trigger path simple and manual.
