Why do deleted or moved photos still appear in Lightroom Classic’s Library?

I moved photos from my computer’s internal drive to an external drive to free up space, then deleted the originals from the internal drive. In Lightroom Classic 11.5, those photos still appear in the Library module under the original folders. Why does Lightroom still show them, and how do I remove those missing files from the catalog properly?

For the next time: You could also do it the other way around to avoid having to re-sync the catalog.

That is : remove the files from Lightroom library and choose Delete from Disk on the confirmation dialog. This way, the files get deleted from both the catalog and your filesystem at the same time.

The above message could say "Delete the rejected" or "Delete the selected" master photo [...] depending on your deletion process (if you rejected the photo or just click on "Remove photo" from the Photo or contextual menu).

Lightroom Classic stores photo records in its catalog, so deleting or moving files in your operating system does not automatically remove them from the Library. The catalog still references the old file locations until you update it.

To clean this up, go to the Library module, right-click the top-level folder that contained those files, and choose Synchronize Folder. Enable Remove missing photos from catalog, then run the sync. Lightroom will scan the folder, detect files that are no longer there, and remove those missing entries from the catalog.

For future moves or deletions, do the file management inside Lightroom instead of in Finder/File Explorer. If you delete from Lightroom and choose Delete from Disk, Lightroom updates both the catalog and the actual filesystem at the same time, which avoids this mismatch.
