Why do Canon G1 X Custom Color settings seem to reset?

On the Canon PowerShot G1 X, I use the Custom Color picture settings to adjust contrast, saturation, sharpness, and color channels. Most of the time these settings stay saved, even after turning the camera off and on, but sometimes they appear to go back to default values.

What causes the G1 X to do this, and when are Custom Color settings actually reset?

It turns out that turning the dial to either C1 or C2 has its own memory for Custom Color. So, it needs to be set there too independently if desired. Once set in all 3 locations, Custom Color no longer resets.

Generated from our catalog & community — verify before relying on it.

The likely cause is mode-specific memory, not a random reset.

On the G1 X, the Custom Color settings can be stored separately for the regular shooting mode and for the C1 and C2 custom mode dial positions. If you set Custom Color in one mode, then later switch to C1 or C2, those positions may still have their own older or default Custom Color values saved.

That makes it look like the settings were reset, when in fact the camera is recalling the settings stored for that dial position.

To keep the look consistent, set your Custom Color adjustments separately in all three places you use:

  • your normal shooting mode
  • C1
  • C2

Once the settings are configured and saved in each mode, they should no longer seem to reset when you switch modes or power-cycle the camera.
