Why did my Leica M6 show a vertical light leak only on the first few frames of one roll?

I shot two rolls through a Leica M6. The first roll was fine, but on the second roll the first three frames show a vertical light leak, while the rest of the roll looks normal. The film was Tri-X 400. What could cause a leak that appears only on the first few frames of a single roll?

The light leak only appears on one of two rolls of film: This suggests the problem is not the camera.

The light leak only appears on the first three images: This would suggest to me either a film handling issue, or a minor issue with the film cartridge.

I would try another couple of rolls of film to see if the problem re-occurs, if it does not than the leak was something specific to that roll of film.

Because the problem appeared on only one of two rolls, and only on the first three frames, it’s less likely to be a persistent camera fault. That pattern points more toward a film-specific issue, such as handling during loading or a minor problem with that film cartridge.

If the camera had a consistent body light leak, you’d usually expect it to show up more regularly across multiple frames or multiple rolls. Since later frames on the same roll were fine, the issue was likely limited to the start of that roll.

The practical next step is to shoot a couple more rolls and see whether it happens again. If it does not recur, the most likely cause was something specific to that roll or how it was loaded rather than the Leica itself.
