Why did my Ilford Rapid Fixer turn purple after fixing old color film, and is it still usable?

I normally use Ilford Ilfostop Indicator stop bath and Ilford Rapid Fixer in my black-and-white workflow. Recently I put some very old, spoiled color film into my black-and-white fixer without developing it, just to remove the silver. Afterward, the fixer turned purple.
Could this be caused by stop bath indicator carried over into the fixer, or is it dye washing out of the color film? More importantly, is the fixer still usable?

How purple is it?
Indicator stop solution will turn purple when it's used up, i.e. when the pH gets above a certain threshold. It sounds like some of the stop bath found its way into your fixer and changed color due to the higher pH of the fixer.

Generated from our catalog & community — verify before relying on it.
The most likely cause is carryover from the indicator stop bath, not the color film itself. Ilford Ilfostop indicator changes color as pH rises; when some stop bath gets into the more alkaline fixer, the indicator can shift to purple.
So the color change suggests stop bath contamination and/or exhausted indicator behavior rather than anything unusual about the fixer chemistry.
Based on the community answer, the fixer may still be usable, but the color alone doesn’t prove its condition. What matters is whether the fixer still clears film properly. If you’re unsure, test its clearing time with a small piece of film leader. If clearing is still normal, it’s likely fine to keep using; if fixing is noticeably slower, replace it.
In short: purple fixer is most likely from stop-bath indicator contamination due to pH change, and usability should be judged by a fixing/clearing test rather than color alone.
