Why are photos on my Nikon D3100 showing only a thin strip and the rest black?

I just got a Nikon D3100. The first few photos were fine, but now every photo appears to show only a very small strip at the top, with the rest of the image black. I tried both lenses and removed the lens caps, but the problem stays the same. Could this be caused by the memory card, and what should I check first?

It could be a problem with your memory card. Some cameras allow you to take a picture without a memory card and review it for a short time. Try to see if you can do it and see if the image looks ok. Then try it with your memory card on. If your image looks corrupted then the problem is with the memory card. If not you can atleast rule out the memory card as the cause.
It would also be helpful to have a sample picture.

A likely first thing to check is the memory card rather than the lenses. If the card is corrupted or not properly formatted for the camera, saved images can appear damaged or partially black.
What to try:
- Test the camera without the memory card if the D3100 allows image review without one.
- Compare results with and without the card.
- If images look normal without the card but corrupted with it, the card is probably the issue.
- Format the card in the camera itself, not on a computer.
- If the problem continues, try a different memory card.
One community reply specifically mentioned a Verbatim card failing early, so if you’re using that brand, replacing it is worth trying.
In general, formatting the card in-camera when you first use it helps ensure compatibility, and reformatting after transferring your photos can help prevent file-system problems.
