Why are my Zorki 4 photos blurry when the lens is set to infinity?

I tested a Zorki 4 and found that images shot with the lens focused to infinity are noticeably blurry, while nearer parts of the frame appear sharper. I already adjusted the rangefinder for infinity and about 1 meter, so I’m trying to understand why distant subjects are still out of focus. What could cause this on a Zorki 4, and how can it be corrected?

You need to adjust the infinity stops on the lens so the rear element goes closer to the image plane. Adapted lenses have this problem and most adaptors with correction elements Destroy image quality.

If the rangefinder seems calibrated but photos are still soft at infinity, the likely issue is the lens’s infinity stop or flange-to-film distance, not just the rangefinder adjustment. The lens may not actually be reaching true infinity focus, so distant subjects stay blurred while closer areas look sharper.
The fix is to adjust the lens’s infinity stop so the optical unit can move slightly closer to the film plane. On rangefinder cameras, the rangefinder can indicate focus correctly only if the lens itself is mechanically able to reach the right position.
If you’re using an adapted lens, this is a common problem. Also avoid adapters with correction glass, since they usually reduce image quality.
In short: check that the lens physically reaches true infinity focus, and adjust the infinity stops if needed.
