I'm looking for a webcam (at least 720p) that can focus at infinity for outdoor landscape time-lapse. Infrared capability would also be useful, although I understand that may require hardware modification such as removing an IR filter. Are there webcam models known to focus reliably at distant subjects?

Yes — some webcams can focus to infinity and have been used for distant outdoor subjects. Based on the answers, models reported to work include the Microsoft LifeCam Studio (autofocus), the Logitech QuickCam Vision Pro 9000, and the Orbit webcam. The Orbit was also noted for pan, tilt, and zoom, which may help for outdoor time-lapse setups.
For infrared use, that is a separate issue from infinity focus. Many webcams include an IR-cut filter, so IR shooting may require modification, and the answers note this may not be easy depending on the model.
If your main goal is landscape time-lapse, look for a webcam with autofocus or confirmed infinity focus, and consider whether outdoor-oriented features like pan/tilt/zoom matter for your setup.
