I want to add a lens hood to my Canon 18-55mm kit lens. Should this lens use a petal-style hood or a round hood? I mainly want some extra protection, but I’d also like to get the correct hood type for the lens.

You need a round one because the front element will rotate when it zooms/focuses.

A round hood is the correct choice for this Canon 18-55mm kit lens. This type of lens uses a rotating front section during focusing/zooming, so a petal hood would not stay properly aligned and could cause issues. Canon commonly specifies the EW-60C style hood for this lens, which is round.
Also, keep in mind that a lens hood’s main job is to block stray light and reduce flare, improving contrast. It can offer some physical protection, but it is not really meant as protection from the elements. If your main goal is extra front-element protection, some photographers add a UV or skylight filter.
