I'm choosing between the Nikon Coolpix P340 and the Sony RX100 as a compact camera. I mainly want it for night photography and daytime nature/landscape shooting. Which model is the better fit, and what are the main trade-offs?

The main contributing factor when it comes to low-light performance is sensor size. The RX100 (Original, II or III) all use a 1" sensor which is larger than the 1/1.7" one used on the Nikon P340. You can see the difference in actual size by comparing both of these on my site. Just like at the rectangle in the row with the Sensor Area heading.

For your priorities, the Sony RX100 is the stronger choice.
The biggest reason is sensor size: the RX100 uses a 1-inch sensor, which is much larger than the P340’s 1/1.7-inch sensor. In practice, that usually means better low-light image quality, less noise at high ISO, and better dynamic range—important for both night scenes and daylight landscapes.
For night photography, the RX100 also has a key advantage: bulb mode, allowing exposures longer than the P340’s 60-second limit. That gives you more flexibility for long-exposure night shots.
Both cameras are bright at the wide end, but the RX100’s larger sensor still gives it the edge in low light and background blur potential.
The Nikon P340’s main advantages are that it’s thinner, lighter, cheaper, slightly wider at the wide end, and offers a bit more zoom reach. If portability, price, or extra zoom matter most, it could still make sense.
But based on night photography and scenery as your priorities, the RX100 is the better overall fit.
