I’m looking for a compact camera, or possibly another small camera system, that can be controlled from a phone or tablet over Wi‑Fi at about 10–12 meters.

The features I need are:

  • image stabilization
  • live view / remote viewfinder in a phone or tablet app
  • remote shutter release
  • remote zoom control if available
  • switching between photo and video modes would be a bonus

I’ve found some Samsung compact models with “remote viewfinder,” but it’s hard to search for this feature on camera sites. Are there other cameras that offer this kind of wireless remote control, and what terms should I search for?

I don't know any DSLR or P&S with motorized zoom, AFAIK only video cameras have such ability and many of them can be controlled remotely too.

I'm not sure about your budget, but wireless tethering is possible with many brand new DSLR cameras. it seems you just didn't know the correct terms and what to look for.

For example Nikon D5200. using Nikon WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter, you can connect it to your Android and iOS device and control your camera and more.

Yes — this feature exists, but the terms to search for are usually wireless tethering, Wi‑Fi remote control, or remote live view, rather than “remote viewfinder.”

Based on the answers, many newer cameras can provide wireless live view and remote shutter control through a phone app. One example mentioned is the Nikon D5200 used with the Nikon WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter, which allows connection to Android or iOS devices for remote camera control.

A key limitation is zoom: remote zoom is uncommon on still cameras unless the lens has a motorized zoom. That’s why this is more typical on camcorders and some compact cameras than on DSLRs with standard interchangeable lenses.

So, if remote shutter and live view are your priorities, look for cameras advertised with Wi‑Fi remote control or wireless tethering. If remote zoom is essential, focus on compact cameras or video-oriented models with powered zoom lenses, since many still cameras won’t support zoom control from the app.
