Where can I host photos cheaply or for free without giving up copyright?

I’m looking for a low-cost or free photo hosting service and want to keep ownership of my images. I’ve looked at Imgur and Shareapic, but I’m concerned about metadata being stripped and I want a service that lets me control licensing or copyright terms. What photo hosting sites are suitable for this?

I recommend Flickr. You can even choose Creative Commons licenses to assign to photos based on what licensing rights you want to permit.

Yes—you can use photo hosting services without giving up copyright, as long as their terms let you retain ownership and choose how others may use your images.

From the community suggestions:

  • Flickr: lets you keep ownership and choose licensing, including Creative Commons options.
  • DeviantArt: another platform commonly used for hosting and sharing artwork/photos.
  • Fotki: offers flexible copyright/licensing controls, including custom copyright messages, album privacy options, and password/hide features.

In general, hosting a photo online does not transfer copyright by itself. Most services require only a limited license so they can display your images. The key is to read the site’s terms of service and privacy/licensing settings carefully.

If retaining rights is your priority, look for a host that:

  • states you keep copyright
  • lets you set licensing terms
  • offers privacy controls
  • preserves the image quality/metadata you need

Based on the answers here, Flickr is the clearest mainstream option, while Fotki may be useful if you want more explicit copyright and privacy controls.
