Where can I get true paper posters printed in the UK, not photo prints?

I’m looking for a UK print service that can make posters from my photos on standard poster-style paper, like rolled retail posters, rather than large photographic prints on photo paper. I’d prefer options suitable for one-offs or short runs. Are there places that offer this, and what kind of printing/paper should I ask for?

Staples are all over the place and print poster sized photos really quite cheaply, and usually while you wait. They use colour laser printers up to A3 and inkjet plotters up to A1. They usually offer a choice of paper as well - the standard is something like 100-130gsm matt paper.

Yes—ask general print shops rather than photo labs. What you want is a poster printed on standard matte paper (around 100–130gsm was mentioned), using large-format inkjet or color laser printing, not a photographic print process.

From the answers, Staples was one option for inexpensive poster-size printing, with color laser up to A3 and inkjet plotters up to A1, and a choice of papers. Quality was described as acceptable rather than exceptional.

A key limitation is that traditional litho poster printing is usually economical only for large runs, so it’s hard to find true mass-market-style posters as one-offs. For short runs, modern digital print shops are the better route.

If you want better results than office-store printing, contact local commercial printers and ask specifically for:

  • short-run digital poster printing
  • matte poster paper (not photo paper)
  • rolled output

Another practical approach is to look at posters you like in public spaces and check whether the printer is credited, or ask the advertiser/promoter who printed them.
