Where can I get constructive critique on my photographs?

I’m looking for effective ways to get honest, useful feedback on my photos from people other than friends and family. General “what can I do better?” posts often don’t get helpful responses, and on some photo-sharing sites it can feel like only already-popular images get attention. What online communities or offline options are good for thoughtful critique?

I would like to recommend one exposure dot com. I recommend this for two reasons.
The critique is honest, harsh, informed, and deep. As a community, they strive very hard to give very in depth reviews and suggestions. They also have the added benefits of extreme honesty, which is sometimes hard to get. One thing I dislike about flikr is precisely the fact that you never get criticized, just complements. If you want to improve, I think that you need to take a little beating, and one exp will dish it out.
The photos are brilliant. This site has the absolute best gallery of any I have seen. Being a member of the community(free) will also provide you with wonderful inspiration, and help you improve in that way by giving you something to strive for.
Hope this helps!

A good critique usually comes from communities built specifically for feedback, not just photo sharing.
From the suggestions here, One Exposure was recommended because its members are known for giving honest, detailed, and sometimes tough critiques rather than only compliments. That kind of direct feedback can be very useful if your goal is improvement.
Offline, a local camera club can be one of the best options. Clubs vary in quality, but a good one gives you regular feedback from photographers who can comment on technique, editing, and presentation. If there isn’t a suitable club nearby, forming a small critique group can work just as well.
If you want quick informal feedback, posting in a photography chat community can also help, as long as you ask for specific critique.
In general, you’ll get better advice if you ask targeted questions like “Is the sharpening too strong?” or “Does the composition work?” rather than a broad request for comments.
