I’m comparing the Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6 VR and the newer 55-200mm f/4-5.6 VR II. Aside from the price and lighter weight of the VR II version, what are the main differences between these two lenses?

Based on the information provided, the main updates in the 55-200mm VR II are:
- a zoom lock switch, which helps keep the lens from extending during transport
- Nikon SIC (Super Integrated Coating), intended to improve flare/ghosting control
- a lighter, more compact design
Optically and in use, they appear to be very similar lenses with the same focal range, aperture, and VR branding. So the practical difference is mostly handling and packaging rather than a major change in reach or brightness.
If you’re choosing between them, the VR II is mainly the more travel-friendly version, with the added convenience of the zoom lock and updated coating.
