I’m looking for a very simple digital camera for an older family member who is barely comfortable with technology. The goal is a point-and-shoot that works well in fully automatic mode, with a large, easy-to-see screen and as few controls as possible. It should be easy to hold and use, and ideally let them review the photo right after pressing the shutter. If possible, I’d also like a simple way to automatically upload photos without needing much computer interaction. Are there beginner-friendly compact cameras or accessories that fit this use case?

Marco Arment (Co-founder of Tumblr, Creator of Instapaper), did a great write up on this exact topic. He settled on the Canon PowerShot SX120 IS.
His Criteria:
- It must be large enough to be held and operated comfortably.
- It must have a very large screen.
- It should have as few controls and on-screen indicators as possible.
- It should use AA batteries.
- It should be fast.
The whole post is essential reading, and characteristic of Marco's logical approach to design.

A simple compact point-and-shoot is the right choice here. Based on the suggestions, Canon’s easy-to-use PowerShot models are good fits, including the PowerShot SX120 IS and SD1300. The key things to prioritize are a large rear screen, minimal buttons and menu clutter, comfortable grip/size, and a reliable full-auto mode.
One answer also recommends Kodak EasyShare cameras, which were designed around simple sharing and may be worth considering if ease of upload is important.
For automatic uploading, look into an Eye-Fi memory card if the camera supports SD cards. These cards can connect to Wi-Fi and upload images automatically, which may be the simplest way to add wireless transfer to an otherwise basic camera.
In short: choose an uncomplicated compact camera with strong auto mode and a big screen, then pair it with an Eye-Fi card if you want the easiest path to auto-uploading.
