I’m using a Canon 5D Mark II with a Sigma 100-300mm f/4 and a 3x teleconverter, and I’m having trouble getting sharp images at very long focal lengths. I suspect camera shake is a major factor.
I’m planning to buy a tripod and want something that could also handle longer lenses in the future, such as a 150-600mm zoom or a 1000mm mirror lens.
What features matter most in a tripod for this kind of use? Is a heavier tripod generally better, and how heavy is “heavy enough”? Should I also be considering a specific type of tripod head for long lenses?

Consider using a gimbal head to balance out the weight of the lens and camera. Long telephoto lenses tend to be unbalanced. No matter how sturdy the tripod, the tiniest bit of force is leveraged and magnified so that the lens and camera shake independently of the tripod.
To evaluate whether camera shake is at fault, just set your camera down on a sturdy table, and release the shutter via timer. If pictures are still fuzzy, the problem may be the quality of the teleconverter, as Phillip Kendall suggests.
