I’m traveling to White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire and Acadia National Park in Maine in August. Do you have any photography-related suggestions, especially for gear that works well if I’ll be hiking?

A tripod is a very useful item to bring for both locations, especially for landscape photography. If you’ll be hiking a lot, a compact travel tripod or a hiking-pole/tripod combination can be a practical choice. It won’t be as stable as a full-size tripod, but the lighter weight and dual use can make it much easier to carry on trails. That kind of setup is particularly helpful when you want support for scenic shots without adding too much gear.

I can't help you with specific subjects to shoot, but I can definitely recommend that you bring a tripod of some sort. If you're hiking, I've had good luck w/ a Trekpod - this isn't as stable as a full-sized tripod, but it's great to have a device that does double-duty as a hiking stick, and it's invaluable when shooting landscapes.

I brought my Trekpod on a 10-day canoe trip earlier this summer, and not only did it help immensely with pictures, it also saved my butt a few times on portages when I was using it as a hiking stick.
