What modern lenses use 49mm filters, and can I use old 49mm color filters on them?

I found several old 49mm color filters (red, orange, light green, and light blue) and I’m wondering whether there are still modern lenses that take 49mm filters. If not, can these filters still be used on current lenses with step-up or step-down rings?

Usage of color filters in digital photography has already been covered in another question.

There certainly are dozens of lenses with 49mm filter size for various mounts, most often for Pentax or Sony. Also, some compact cameras use that filter size, e.g. Fuji X100 (with either AR-X100 adapter or an extra 49mm filter frame).

Yes. There are still modern lenses and accessories that use 49mm filter threads, and 49mm has also been common on many older manual-focus lenses that are still widely adapted today.

From the community examples, 49mm is found on some Sony and Pentax lenses, and it can also be used with certain compact-camera filter adapters such as the Fuji X100 with the appropriate adapter.

If a lens does not have a 49mm thread, your filters may still be usable with adapter rings:

  • step-up rings from smaller sizes such as 40.5mm, 43mm, or 46mm to 49mm are commonly practical
  • in some cases, a step-down ring from a larger thread such as 52mm or 55mm to 49mm may work, but this can risk vignetting depending on the lens and format

So the short answer is: yes, your filters are likely still usable, either directly on a 49mm-thread lens or via an adapter ring. Whether color filters are useful for your particular digital workflow is a separate question.
