I’m shooting bracketed exposures and want to combine them into an HDR image on a Mac (OS X Lion). What software options work well for HDR merging, including standalone apps or Lightroom/Aperture/Photoshop plug-ins?

I am not MAC user, but under Windows I used opensource Luminance HDR and as I see, it is also available for MAC, so you can try it.

Several Mac options were recommended for merging bracketed shots into HDR images:

  • Luminance HDR: open-source and available for Mac.
  • LR/Enfuse: a Lightroom plug-in that integrates well into a Lightroom workflow.
  • Hugin: open-source, and can use Enfuse/PanoTools tools for this kind of processing.
  • Nik HDR Efex Pro: a dedicated HDR tool with plug-ins for Lightroom, Aperture, and Photoshop, noted for flexible controls and realistic-looking tone mapping.

Which is best depends on your workflow:

  • If you want free/open-source, try Luminance HDR or Hugin.
  • If you already use Lightroom, LR/Enfuse is a convenient choice.
  • If you want a dedicated HDR application with more creative controls, HDR Efex Pro is a strong option.

In general, HDR software aligns and merges your bracketed exposures, then applies tone mapping or exposure fusion to fit the scene’s dynamic range into a viewable image.
