I’m looking for a real camera for my 6-year-old. He currently uses a V-Tech kids’ camera and loves it, but the image quality is very poor. I’d like something simple and durable—ideally a rugged point-and-shoot—but I’m also open to other beginner-friendly options if they’re realistic for a child to handle.

The Olympus Tough-8010 is the most indestructible camera there is. It is point and shoot, shockproof, drop-proof, waterproof and freezeproof. My baby even managed to take a picture of herself with the predecessor model (Tough-8000) after biting it for a few minutes! Here's a funny commercial for an older model, it gives you an idea of the 'tough' part.

A rugged compact camera is a sensible choice for a 6-year-old, especially if durability is your top priority. Community replies specifically recommend Olympus Tough models because they’re designed to handle drops and rough use.

That said, the best option depends on the child. Some kids are careful enough to use a regular compact camera, and several people suggested an inexpensive older or refurbished point-and-shoot as a good middle ground: much better image quality than toy cameras, simple to use, and replaceable if it gets damaged.

So the practical choices are:

  • a rugged waterproof/shockproof compact if you expect hard use
  • an inexpensive older/refurbished point-and-shoot if your child is reasonably careful
  • potentially a more advanced camera only if the child is especially responsible

For most parents, a durable compact or low-cost used point-and-shoot is the safest bet.
