Compared with a bare bulb or the built-in reflector on lights like the B1, B2, or D2, it concentrates and focuses the flash output more in the direction it’s pointed. In practice, that means:

• more controlled, forward-thrown light
• harder shadows with clearer transitions between highlight and shadow
• a look often associated with the light being placed relatively farther from the subject

So if you're expecting soft, wrapping light, this is not usually the modifier for that. Think of it more as a tool for punchier, focused illumination rather than broad diffusion.
