I’m trying to identify a photography style so I can learn more about it. The look I mean is typically minimalist, monochrome or near-monochrome, sharply focused, and uses a dark or black background with strong contrast between deep blacks and bright highlights. Is there a commonly used name for this style?

The most general term I can find that has reliable returns from google image search is "high contrast monochrome photography"

Some of the key stylistic points appear to be a strong use of broad areas of both full black and full white, but at the same time being a more balanced approach than High Key Or Low Key monochrome.

However, there is a clear lean towards the darker end, and I feel like there is a somewhat fuzzy distinction between "Low Key" and "High contrast" as modern image search returns provide.

  • Results from the use of the "Low Key" searches appear to make use of full white slightly less often, but there is otherwise a large overlap between the two terms.

There isn’t one single universally accepted name, but the most useful search terms are low-key photography and high-contrast monochrome photography.

  • Low-key usually describes images built around dark tones, often with black backgrounds and selective lighting.
  • High-contrast monochrome fits when the defining feature is strong separation between deep blacks and bright whites.
  • Noir may also be used in a stylistic sense, but it’s broader and less precise as a photography technique term.

So if you’re trying to study or search for this look, start with “low-key black and white photography” and “high-contrast monochrome photography.” Those terms best match the examples described.
