I’m looking for the correct photography/video term for an image or movie sequence in which the same subject stays in the same relative position in every shot, while the surroundings or background change. For example, the same car shown in different landscapes, or the same mixer shown in different kitchens for a product promo. Is there a standard term for this style?

Instead of timelapse, it is more like Hyperlapse.

The difference, IMHO is that Timelapse is using a fixed camera, and hyper-lapse the camera is moving, in this case with the subjet in the same relative position.

Some tips on this other answer: How to reposition subject in the same place and pose in a series of images over time

There isn’t a widely accepted special term just for this effect. In general, people would describe it as a time-lapse or sequence with a locked subject/composition.

If the camera position changes between shots while the subject remains aligned in the same place in the frame, it’s often described as hyperlapse-like. A common distinction is:

  • time-lapse: camera stays fixed
  • hyperlapse: camera moves between frames

So for product marketing, the clearest wording is usually descriptive rather than a single formal term, such as “a sequence where the subject is kept fixed in frame while the background changes.”
