When removing the Canon BG-E9 battery grip from a Canon 60D, there is a small recessed space on the section that fits into the camera body. It looks like a part might clip into place there, with a small retaining tab and foam pad. What is this slot used for?

The battery door. This is where the door that is normally on the camera goes while you have the battery grip on the camera. That way, when you remove the grip, you can easily put the door back on without losing it.
The manual shows how it works.

Yes — that slot is for storing the camera’s battery compartment door while the BG-E9 grip is attached.
On the Canon 60D, the battery door is removed before fitting the grip. Canon provides a small holder on the grip so you don’t lose the door while using it. The tab and foam help keep the door secured in place.
So the space is intentional and not for electronics or an extra accessory. The camera manual also shows this storage feature and how the door fits there.
