I want to measure an object from a photo taken on a flat plane. To help with post-processing such as lens correction and de-skewing, I’m looking for the kind of calibration ruler/scale target often placed next to the subject. What is the proper name for this ruler, and what should I search for to find similar measurement targets?

The ruler shown is commonly called an ABFO No. 2 scale (often written ABFO #2 ruler). It’s a forensic photography scale designed to provide a known reference size in photos, especially for close-up documentation.
If you want similar items, search for terms like ABFO #2 scale, forensic photo scale, photogrammetry scale, or calibration target. These are typically sold by forensic, scientific, or photographic evidence-supply vendors.
