What filter size do I need for the Canon PowerShot SX30 IS?

I have a Canon PowerShot SX30 IS and want to buy a filter. I've seen conflicting advice online about using a 52mm UV filter directly on the camera versus using a 67mm filter with an adapter. What is the correct way to mount a filter on the SX30 IS, and which filter size should I buy?

The SX30 IS has a thread which is designed to hold a slim step-up ring to 67mm which Canon sells as an accessory. This lets you use 67mm thread. If you use smaller thread directly, it will ruin your photos taken near wide-angle.

The SX30 IS is meant to use filters via Canon’s adapter tube, not by screwing a filter directly onto the lens barrel. The proper setup is the Canon FA-DC67A adapter (or equivalent), which gives you a standard 67mm filter thread.
Some people notice a roughly 52mm thread-like fitting on the camera, but it is not a proper 52mm filter thread. Trying to attach a 52mm filter directly can fit poorly, and smaller filters can vignette or interfere with shots at the wide end.
So if you want to use a UV, polarizer, or other screw-in filter, buy the adapter and then buy 67mm filters.
