What does a lens distortion rating like 4% barrel distortion mean in a photo?

I understand what barrel distortion is, but I’m not sure how to interpret a rating like 4%. How does that percentage relate to what you would actually see in an image?

We desire a faithful image. We image a rectangle with the same aspect ratio as our camera’s senor/film frame. If we image at unity (life-size) we expect the image of the rectangle to kiss-off at the corners of the image area. With barrel distortion the image will under spill. With pincushion distortion, the image will over spill. The delta (valuable increment) is expressed as a percentage of the height of the frame. 4% is scarcely noticeable.

A 4% barrel distortion rating describes how far the image bows outward from an ideal rectilinear rendering. In simple terms, straight lines near the edges of the frame will curve outward slightly instead of staying perfectly straight.
The percentage is typically expressed relative to the frame height. If you photographed a perfectly rectangular subject that should fit the frame exactly, barrel distortion would make the image “underspill” at the corners—the subject’s corners would fall slightly inward compared with an undistorted image. Pincushion distortion does the opposite and tends to “overspill.”
