My Canon EOS 550D creates a .THM file alongside some images/files on the SD card. What is a .THM file, what is it used for, and can it be viewed on a computer?

It's a thumbnail file. Usually it's generated when you take a video, to give you a preview image on the LCD and to store the EXIF information for exposure, focal length, etc.

You can rename it to .jpg if you want to view it on your computer.

A .THM file is typically a thumbnail file: a small JPEG-like preview image the camera uses for quick playback on the LCD. It may also carry metadata such as exposure and focal-length information, especially alongside video files.

On-camera, the thumbnail lets the camera show previews quickly without loading the full-resolution file every time; if you zoom in, the camera can then load the full image/video data.

On a computer, a THM file can often be viewed by renaming it to .jpg, since it may just be a small JPEG with a different extension.

In short: it’s mainly for preview/playback convenience and metadata, and it’s normal to see these files on Canon media.
