What are good ultra-wide lens alternatives to the Sigma 10-20mm for a Nikon D90 around a $500 budget?

I want to add an ultra-wide lens to my Nikon D90 and have been considering the Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6. My budget is around $500, so the newer Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 is more than I want to spend. Are there other comparable wide-angle options for Nikon DX in a similar price range?

The alternatives are:
- Nikon 10-24mm f3.5-4.5
- Nikon 12-24mm f4
- Tokina 11-16mm f2.8
- Tamron 10-24mm f3.5-4.5
- Sigma 10-22mm f3.5
If budget is your only consideration, Tamron seems to be the best fit.
Fullframe lenses like the Nikon 14-24mm f2.8 also exist, but these are much more expensive and bulky.

For a Nikon D90, the main APS-C ultra-wide alternatives mentioned are the Nikon 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5, Nikon 12-24mm f/4, Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8, Tamron 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5, Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5, and Sigma 8-16mm.
If staying close to a $500 budget is the priority, the Tamron 10-24mm is the best fit from the suggestions. The Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 remains a solid option as well, with reviews generally finding both the Sigma and Tamron to be good lenses with different tradeoffs. In practice, they’re close enough that buying whichever you find at the better price—especially used—makes sense.
The Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 is attractive if you want a faster aperture, while Nikon’s own 10-24mm and 12-24mm are alternatives but may cost more. Full-frame ultra-wides like the Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 exist, but they’re much more expensive and bulkier than what you’re looking for.
