Simple, affordable cloud backup options for Nikon .NEF files on Mac and Windows

I want an easy, low-cost way to back up Nikon .NEF RAW files to the cloud. Ideally it should work like Dropbox or another automatic background backup system, and support both Mac and Windows. Are there cloud backup services that can automatically watch folders and upload new RAW files without much manual effort?

There are several services available (see below, copied from my answer to the linked question).

Regarding usability: These services generally allow you to configure a specific collection of directories which are then scanned for changes. Whenever a change occurs the new files or amendments are uploaded, so there is no manual effort involved. The online utilities for retrieving files can vary, so I would suggest looking at the demo pages for these services.

The market for online cloud backup is competitive but I'm not sure if these are as cheap as Google paid storage.

Yes. A practical approach is to use a cloud backup service that watches selected folders and uploads changes automatically in the background. That gives you a Dropbox-like workflow for .NEF files without needing to manually copy files each time.

Based on the answers, services commonly used for this include Mozy, Carbonite, Backblaze, CrashPlan, Dropbox, and SugarSync. In general, these let you choose one or more folders, then they scan for changes and upload new or modified files automatically.

A few points to keep in mind:

  • .NEF files are just files, so any normal backup/sync service can store them.
  • Ease of restoring files varies by service, so check each provider’s restore/download process.
  • Pricing and storage limits differ, so compare current plans if low cost is your priority.
  • For photo libraries, backing up the folders that contain your originals is usually the simplest setup.

So yes: automatic cloud backup for .NEF files on both Mac and Windows is available, and the best choice depends mostly on current pricing, storage limits, and restore experience.
