Should I use iPhoto as a catch-all library and Aperture for editing, or point Aperture to my existing iPhoto library?

I have a large iPhoto library with thousands of photos, including duplicates and many older low-resolution images. I recently bought Aperture 3 and want to use it for selecting and editing my better photos from a newer camera and my phone.

Would it make sense to keep using iPhoto as the main import library and then use Aperture only for the best images, or is it better to have Aperture work with the existing iPhoto library to avoid wasting space?

I would definitely point Aperture to the iPhoto library. In fact, I'd ditch iPhoto altogether and just use OSX's Image Capture to import my photos.

A better workflow is to have Aperture use your existing iPhoto library rather than maintaining separate libraries for the same photos. That avoids unnecessary duplication and saves disk space.

Based on the advice given, you could even simplify further: stop using iPhoto as the main import tool and import photos directly with macOS Image Capture, then manage and edit them in Aperture.

So the practical recommendation is:

  • Don’t use iPhoto as a “catch-all” if Aperture will be your main organizer/editor.
  • Point Aperture at the existing iPhoto library if you want to keep your current photos without duplicating them.
  • Consider importing future photos directly instead of routing everything through iPhoto first.

That keeps your workflow simpler and avoids wasting storage on multiple copies of the same images.
