Olympus OM-D E-M5 firmware update won't start from 1.6 to 1.7

I'm trying to update the firmware on an Olympus OM-D E-M5 from version 1.6 to 1.7 using the Olympus firmware updater on a Mac. The updater detects the camera, shows the current and available firmware versions, and lets me start the update, but the camera never shows the normal firmware-update screen with the rotating arrows. Instead, the camera screen stays blank, and after restarting the camera the body firmware is still 1.6. Lens firmware updates work normally with the same setup. What can prevent the body firmware update from starting, and how can I complete the update?

After I replaced the 64GB SD card that I'm normally using with a 1 GB card, the update worked.

Go figure...

A likely cause is the SD card in the camera. In the reported case, the body firmware update would not start with a 64GB card installed, but it worked after swapping to a much smaller 1GB card.

Try this:

  • power off the camera
  • remove the current SD card
  • insert a small, simple SD card if you have one available
  • reconnect the camera by USB, choose Storage mode, and run the updater again

Since lens updates worked, the USB connection and updater were probably basically fine. The issue appears to be that the camera body update can be sensitive to the installed memory card, even though that is not obvious from the updater process.

If possible, use a freshly formatted card in the camera before retrying.
