Nikon D90 shutter button works intermittently depending on camera position

My Nikon D90 has developed an intermittent shutter-release problem. Sometimes half-press and full-press both fail, sometimes half-press works but full-press does not, and sometimes the button clicks without actually taking a photo unless I press very hard. I have ruled out focus lock, flash recharge, buffer/card issues, and shooting mode mistakes. Oddly, it works reliably when the camera is pointed upward, but becomes intermittent when held normally. Has anyone seen this on a D90 or similar camera, and is there anything worth trying before sending it for service?

Send it out and at least get a quote; you don't even need to send it to Nikon.

This is almost certainly a mechanical issue with the shutter, something well within the skills of most camera service centers. The most expensive part in a dSLR is the sensor- the body especially, and its mechanisms, are very inexpensive, comparatively.

This sounds most likely like a hardware problem, but there are a couple of simple things to try first.

First, cycle the AF/M switches on both the camera body and lens several times, and try switching focus mode from A to M and back. At least one user reported this restored normal operation, possibly by cleaning up a dirty or inconsistent switch contact.

If that does not help, the symptoms strongly suggest a mechanical or electrical fault in the shutter-release/button assembly or a related internal connection. The fact that it changes with camera orientation points away from normal settings issues and toward something physical inside the body.

At that point, the sensible next step is to have the camera inspected by a repair shop and get a quote. It does not have to go directly to Nikon; an independent camera service center should be able to diagnose a shutter/button mechanism issue.
