Lens won’t fully release from Nikon D3100 body

The kit lens on a Nikon D3100 still works normally and autofocus is fine, but when the lens-release button is pressed the lens only turns partway and won’t come off the mount. It moves past the normal click but stops before it can be removed. What is the safest way to deal with this, and should it be sent in for service if the camera is still under warranty?

If the camera is still under warranty, your best bet is to send it in regardless of if the repair itself is covered or not, since fixing it yourself is likely to void the warranty. It sounds like the latch is probably stuck or perhaps the button simply isn't actuating it. They'll probably have to take the body apart to access the mechanism from behind.

If the lens won’t rotate far enough to come off, the most likely issue is the lens-release/latch mechanism in the camera mount. Since the lens and camera still function, forcing it is not a good idea—you could damage the mount, latch, or lens contacts.

If the camera is still under warranty, the safest recommendation is to send it to Nikon/service support rather than trying to fix it yourself. A repair like this may require opening the camera body to access the release mechanism from behind, and DIY work could void the warranty.

So: don’t force the lens, and if warranty is active, use authorized service.
