I’m looking for a firmware enhancement or hack for the Pentax K-x, similar to CHDK on Canon compact cameras. Is there any third-party firmware or toolkit that adds features or enables software modifications for this camera?

I've also tried to find a CHDK-like software for Pentax, probably the best Pentax firmware hack project is Pentax Hack.

They were able to decrypt several Pentax firmwares, and modify a few things, like turning on debug mode.

Although the project supports several Pentax DSLRs, unfortunately it does not support K-x.

There doesn’t appear to be a mature CHDK-style firmware option for the Pentax K-x.

Community answers point to Pentax Hack as one of the main Pentax firmware-hacking efforts. It reportedly decrypted several Pentax firmware files and enabled limited modifications such as debug mode on some supported DSLR models, but the K-x was not supported.

Another project mentioned is PHDK by “shodan,” which focused on deeper Pentax DSLR firmware hacking. However, based on the answers provided, it’s more of a hacking effort/project than a widely used, end-user firmware enhancement for the K-x.

So the practical answer is: no established third-party firmware like CHDK is available for the Pentax K-x, though there have been experimental Pentax firmware-hacking projects.
