I'm looking for a simple reference or mini-tutorial that briefly explains what each filter in Nik Software does, especially in suites like Color Efex Pro. Is there an official list, cheat sheet, or other good way to learn the filters without guessing?

If you go to their site, click on a product, such as Color Efex Pro, then you'll see "Filter Samples" with an image sample and description for each filter.
There are also webinars and online tutorials
Nik also has 30-day demo/trial versions of their plugins, so you can download and look through them all.

Yes. The most useful starting point is Nik’s own product pages: for each plugin (such as Color Efex Pro), look for filter samples, which show example images and a short description of each filter.
Other helpful options mentioned by users are:
- Nik webinars and online tutorials
- YouTube tutorials
- The trial/demo versions, which let you explore the filters directly
A full “cheat sheet” is hard because Nik filters are modular and can be chained together, so results depend heavily on the order of effects and the settings used. In practice, learning Nik usually takes experimentation.
A good approach is to start with the basic filters, review the official sample descriptions, and test them on your own images. For example, some filters are better suited to certain subjects than others, so hands-on testing is often more useful than a one-line summary.
