Is it safe to walk around with a square filter and holder attached to the lens?

I'm considering a square filter system for ND or graduated ND use, especially for shooting in bright sunlight. One concern I have is whether it's practical or safe to leave a square filter and holder attached while walking around and shooting handheld, rather than only when working from a tripod. Is the filter likely to stay secure, and are there any downsides to moving around with it mounted?

can you walk around with these filters attached?
I don't know how much the Cokin holder grips the filter. I have the Lee system, and from the standpoint the filter holder gripping the filter, I would have every confidence in walking around with the filter in place. I would have no fear that the filter would slip out.
However, other than briefly moving to another spot, I wouldn't be walking around, run-and-gun ready-to-shoot style, leaving the filter on. The reason is that a rectangular GND presents so many opportunities for snagging and catching on things. Plus, with a 100mm × 150mm area (4" × 6"), that's a lot of opportunities to scratch a resin filter.
The Lee filter holder snaps onto the lens adapter very quickly and easily, without looking. Indeed, it goes on so easy (and comes off easy), I'd be afraid of the spring loaded filter holder release handle snagging on clothing, letting the holder and filter fly off the lens, before I'd ever worry about the filter slipping out of the holder.
I carry a filter pouch (the Lowepro 100) with the GND pre-inserted into the holder. That way, I can quickly grab the filter + holder combo from the pouch and slap it on the lens in a few short seconds.

Generally, yes—the holder usually grips the filter securely enough that it shouldn’t simply slip out during normal movement. At least with systems like Lee, users report confidence in the holder’s grip.
That said, leaving a square or rectangular filter mounted while walking around is usually not ideal. The bigger issue isn’t the filter falling out, but that the filter sticks out from the lens and can easily snag on things or get scratched, especially larger rectangular graduated ND filters. Resin filters are particularly vulnerable.
A better approach is to mount the holder/filter when you’re ready to shoot, then remove it when moving any real distance. Good square-filter systems are designed to attach and detach quickly, so this is usually not much of a hassle.
So: secure enough for short moves between shots, but not the best choice for extended walk-around shooting with the filter left on the lens.
