I have a Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G VR lens. If I gently shake the rear of the lens near my ear, I can hear a faint sound as if something inside is moving. The lens seems to work normally when mounted on the camera. Is this kind of slight internal noise normal for this lens?

It is normal to hear some clicking sound by shaking a lens, because of AF mechanism. Zoom lenses and VR make more noise because they are made of moving parts.

Yes — a faint clicking or rattling sound can be normal in a lens like this, especially a zoom lens with autofocus and VR. These lenses contain moving groups and mechanical parts, so a little internal movement or noise when gently shaken is not unusual. Some of what you hear may also be slight movement from the zoom mechanism. If the lens focuses normally, the zoom operates smoothly, VR works as expected, and image quality looks normal, a small noise by itself usually isn’t a problem. If you notice strong looseness, grinding, autofocus issues, or reduced image quality, then it would be worth having the lens checked.
