Is a metallic noise from the zoom ring on a Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L II normal?

My new Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L II makes a slight metallic noise when I turn the zoom ring. It seems to come from the moving part of the lens barrel, and it sounds different from my other lenses. Is some zoom-ring noise normal on this lens, or could this indicate a bad copy?

There should not be a metallic sound. Maybe a little sound from parts of the inner barrel moving against the outer barrel. You may have a bad copy that escaped Canon QA.

Generated from our catalog & community — verify before relying on it.
A little mechanical sound from the barrel moving can be normal on a zoom lens, but a distinctly metallic noise is not typical. Based on the community feedback, this could indicate a bad copy or a lens that slipped through quality control. If the sound is clearly different from your other lenses and seems unusual, it’s reasonable to have the lens inspected or exchanged.
