How should rotated photos be oriented in a physical photo album?

I’m assembling a physical photo album with printed photos mounted on the pages. Most images are landscape and will be printed small, but some larger landscape group shots need to be rotated to fill a full page. I also have some smaller portrait shots that may be placed two to a page.

When placing rotated photos on facing pages, is there a standard or commonly preferred orientation? Specifically, should the bottom of each photo face the album’s outer edge, or should it face the right edge of the page so that a viewer turns the album only one way across a spread?

I’m looking for general layout guidance and viewer-friendly practice rather than strict rules.

From a reader's point of view, I would appreciate having to turn the album only once per double page. So I would vote for the right edge alignment.

There isn’t a strict standard for album layout, so either choice is valid. The main practical guidance from the answers is to optimize for easy viewing.

If you have rotated photos across a two-page spread, orienting them so the bottom faces the right edge is generally more viewer-friendly because the album only needs to be turned one way for both pages. That makes the flow easier and avoids repeated flipping, which can become distracting or annoying.

So if your priority is comfort and consistency for the viewer, right-edge alignment is the better default.

That said, album design is ultimately creative. If outer-edge alignment better suits a particular layout or visual idea, it’s not “wrong.” Physical albums are flexible, and you can experiment or revise if needed.

In short: there’s no mandatory rule, but for usability and smooth viewing, orient rotated images so a reader turns the album only once per spread.
