How should I set the diopter on a Nikon D200 viewfinder?

I accidentally changed the diopter setting on my Nikon D200 and I’m not sure how to get it back. I have normal vision and don’t wear glasses while shooting. Is there a standard or “perfect vision” position for the diopter, or should it always be adjusted manually?

This is really a personal setting. Even if you have "perfect vision", you want to set this to a custom setting for yourself. Put the camera on a tripod, autofocus the camera at something bright with good texture, and adjust the diopter to your liking. Some DSLR's have a marking at the "default" position, but not all. Personally I don't believe the default position matters, as you should decide the best spot for it to sit.

There isn’t a universal diopter position for “perfect vision.” The viewfinder diopter is a personal adjustment, even for people with normal eyesight, and it’s also useful if you sometimes shoot with glasses.
The best approach is to set it by eye:
- Put the camera on a tripod or hold it steady.
- Autofocus on something bright with fine detail.
- Look through the viewfinder and turn the diopter control until the view appears sharp and comfortable.
Some cameras may have a center or default mark, but that’s usually just a reference point, not a guaranteed correct setting. What matters is where the viewfinder looks clearest to you.
If the built-in range isn’t enough, optional corrective eyepieces are available for some cameras.
